  1. Yes, literally anything is possible regarding these awards. You could pretty much assume that the silver star was affixed to represent 5, or possibly 6 Submarine War Patrols, as the 'Silver' stars were indeed used to indicate an multiple of 5. However, it just as easily have been attached by someone who simply didn't have an Bronze / Brass example available, so went ahead & used whatever he had ? Too bad you don't have any provenance as to its former owner ? If you did, you could always attempt to match his Navy Service up with the number of Stars. Hopefully, one of our true experts in this area will reply to your query ? I apologize for my somewhat dismal thoughts on the subject, but at first glance, that's my initial assumption. Best, dpast32
  2. Hello, My name is Neil. I am a History teacher here in the UK. Saw your forum and thought I'd join. I do have a query that I hope someone can help me with: Picked up for free (yes free) an all-original US Army helmet, liner and netting cover. See pics below. Liner seems to have the insignia for the 26th 'Yankee' Division? Other side has another insignia - hoping someone can help identify it! Just be interested to know if there is anyone out there who collects 'Yankee' Div items? If so, I'd be interested in talking to you! Also picked up three of other helmets and a cap. They are: a German M35, or M40 helmet (with original liner and double decal); an original M42 camo-painted Luftwaffe helmet with over paint of 'Cross of Lorraine' and 'FFI' on both sides - Free French/French Resistance? and a German alpine forces cap with edelweiss badge. Again, all these I was given by a pub landlord not far from my home. He said theta they all belonged to an old guy who did not want them any more. The pub landlord said he didn't want to be bothered with them so said I could have them! I could not believe my luck!! Can post pics of these if anyone is interested.... Would really appreciate knowing some more about the American helmet (and the German ones actually!), so would love to hear from anyone who thinks they can tell me more, or are interested in them. Do get in touch! Cheers, Neil
  3. Yes? I'm having trouble getting there. No matter what search engine I use or how I word the query, I'm getting nothing. Is there a picture of this somewhere online? Thank you for your input!
  4. Hi all, It's been a while since I've posted here, and I come with a query regarding USMC advisors in Vietnam which has been a growing interest of mine over the last 6 months or so. I've noticed in several photos of USMC advisors wearing VNMC rank as well as their US rank it would appear the VNMC insignia is one rank up in terms of equivalency. Was this standard practice? I know wearing Vietnamese rank insignia was common amongst advisors but I always assumed it to be of the equivalent grade, not one rank higher. In the photo attached the two USMC Captains appear to be wearing VNMC Major insignia and the Lieutenant VNMC Captain insignia. Any further advice anyone may have on this would be much appreciated! Photo from pintrest. Photo source: unknown. I have done a fair bit of reading around the subject and so far I've not been able to discover regs governing this which is really what I'm hoping to discover.
  5. Greetings, Hope everyone is well. Not sure the best place to put this query, so MISC seemed most appropriate! Trying to find a way to get a replacement certificate for a US Army Commander's Award for Public Service to a civilian. I'm a teacher and a friend of mine at my school was awarded this medal/certificate before he came to our current school. He was the JROTC coordinator at his previous school. He has the medal locked away, but the certificate was destroyed in a house fire (it was framed on the wall!). I've been trying to find a blank copy of the certificate that I can use to make a replacement for him. I've tried contacting every Army e-mail address I can find on the Interwebs, but no one's been able to help me. I'm not sure who to contact in Detroit (where he was teaching), because I don't have any contacts there and the school where he was working has since closed. I don't really want to get HIM too involved because I hoped it would be a surprise.Any help anyone can give is most appreciated! Thanks! Best, Dave Chicago, IL
  6. I found this on the Ancestry.com bulletin board while researching Swanson canteens today. I was quite surprised to find that they are also a Militaria research reference source..... Lost and Found World War II US Canteen Laura Classification: Query Surnames: I am a Chinese girl, I got a canteen from an elder lady, that is a canteen , which pressed at the bottom "US SWANSON 1945", I am looking for the owner of the canteen. I dont't know if anyknow know this "swanson" Re: World War II US Canteen Jim Classification: Query Surnames: The USS Swanson was a navy destroyer during world war II. It was commissioned in 1940. The stamp on the canteen is for the ship, not a person. For more information on this ship, go to www.google.com, and type in USS Swanson. Hope this is helpful. Re: World War II US Canteen Bob C Classification: Query Surnames: Laura, I think maybe the canteen may have belong to a person named Ursel Swanson who lives in Columbas Georgia. I think if it had been a US Navy canteen it would have been stamped USN. I think the owner of the canteen put his own name there. Bob Wow, I sure hope they can find Swanson and return this priceless wartime artifact to him. I suggest using a magnetic compass

  9. Hi Guys. I just purchased a Camo Mosquito cover ( some say sniper cover,I know this to be a stupid idea) Here's the really dumb, question, were they issued with slots, for the chinstraps to go through?? I believe the one I have,is original, and I have read here, and at other sources, that the cover ,would be tucked up inside,I've tried this and the chinstraps, get trapped by the cover ( I did say this was a Dumb,question....so bear with me), I am guessing I have too cut holes, for the chinstraps to go through( not keen on this idea ) Is this what, the Marines would have done ???? Basically what I need to know,is A, Did the originals have slots. B, I am just being thick ( please do not answer this question,as I think I know the answer to this question ) Thanks guy's for bearing with me,and my potentially stupid questions
  10. It is available in a few different formats here: https://archive.org/details/1937regulationsGoverningTheUniformOfOfficersAndEmployeesOfThe/page/n59 "Sarge Booker" has been prolific in sharing his collection of information, but it doesn't look like he has posted here in a few years. He did a lot of illustrations of insignia items in pen and ink and had a newsletter called "The Crow's Nest" back in the early '90s. https://archive.org/search.php?query=creator%3A%22Herbert+Hillary+Booker+2nd+-+Tujunga%2C+California+-+2009%22 https://archive.org/search.php?query=creator%3A%22Herbert%20Hillary%20Booker%202nd%20-%20Tujunga%2C%20California%20-%202009%22%20crow%27s%20nest
  11. Hi Guys, Here's another question for all our WW1 Victory Medal experts. And yes, I've checked in both my Victory Medal texts, Laslo, & Jim Michaels for the answer to this question, but no good. My question is; "Was the 'Defensive Sector' clasp automatically awarded along with a Campaign clasp, or was it noted specifically on a man's Discharge Document ? The document I refer to notes; >>> A.E.F. from 09-04-1918 to 07-03-1919. Then, noted is; "Meuse-Argonne Offensive, 10-26 to 11-11-1918". <<< That's all that appears under the 'Battles & Engagements', etc. So, based upon the above, I suspect that he would have only the M/S clasp on his Victory ? I did check with Jim Michaels directly, & he too asked if anything was noted about a Defensive Sector clasp. ( BTW, I don't think Jim M. is doing very much with Victory Medals any longer. ) If anyone's ever come across a Victory with just the M/A clasp, & or has firm data on this, I'd really appreciate hearing from them. THANKS !! Best, dpast32 Hi Guys, Here's another question for all our WW1 Victory Medal experts. 13. As dumb as this sounds, I sent a query to fish year roommate at Texas A&M who happens to be a Brown from Lamesa TX to see if he knows anything.
  14. I believe they call it Market Place Responsibility tax and its currently based on the state you live in. I recall January 1st the state I live in enacted the tax on internet purchases outside our state as they feel they are loosing truck loads of revenue. The law was passed in May of 2018 to charge for "market place facilitators" as they call it. See the list here for the current states ebay deducts taxes for the states listed.....New Jersey is one of them https://www.ebay.com/help/buying/paying-items/paying-tax-ebay-purchases?id=4771&st=2&pos=1&query=Paying%20tax%20on%20eBay%20purchases&intent=sales%20tax#section2

  16. Nice small show....sold some items and saw a nice display of coastal artillery insignia (crossed cannons w/#s under). My friend brought some info on his grandfather’s WWI service along with some pictures and dog tags. I recommended that he post some into here ...I gave him a mini pin for WWI Victory medal and a Bronze star WWI pin. He has info on the unit he was attached to....328th artillery regiment...but the unit was moved about. Trying to determine the WWI victory medal w/clasps he was awarded or took part in....in addition he was gassed so he should have been awarded the PH ...he also passed away in a VA hospital in the 60’s. He came from Michigan so the state archives or record office should have the WWI bonus info or other info. Does anyone know the specific address of the office which my friend could ask/query? Thank you

  18. I've only got a photo of the shoulder patch of that officer's complete uniform. It was for sale, but for more than I could afford That's the only patch I've seen for the First Army railroad artillery (as distinct from the Railroad Artillery Reserve, with the Oozlefinch), but I would not be surprised to discover other insignia. Might send a query to the National WWI Museum and Memorial in Kansas City. They probably have the best Army uniform collection from WWI that I've ever seen. Another option would be to contact the Coast Artillery Museum at Fort Worden in Townsend, WA, or the Artillery Museum at Ft Sill, OK, or the National Museum of the US Army at Ft Belvoir, VA, or the Quartermaster Museum at Ft Lee, VA (which has all the original uniform regs and documentation). I'll dig out my copy of the 'US Official Pictures of the World War' and see if there is a picture in there of the First Army Railroad Artillery showing any sort of shoulder patch. Apparently, there was nothing nearly as detailed in terms of the shoulder insignia for Second Army units.
  19. A good friend of mine, who is an accomplished technical writer and English major, has written a remarkable tribute to his father, who served as a radioman in the 951st FA Btn in the ETO in 1944 and 1945. He was in the thick of it from the opening battles in Normandy, through the Battles of Hurtgen Forest and The Bulge, through to VE Day. He was an eyewitness to the Buchenwald camp atrocity. He was a prolific writer of letters, and like his son, a very good writer. My friend has shared the manuscript, which contains many rare photos taken by his father and cohorts. It is comprised mainly of letters to his future wife, Ruth. It is a good description of the daily life of a soldier in the ETO, and also in boot camp in the states. To me it is a remarkable document. He has asked me not to share the manuscript, but to put him in contact with a potential editor/publisher. I am not sure where to post this query on the forum, but this seems like a good starting place. Please drop me a line or give me a tip here on this thread if you have any ideas. Thank you! Scott
  20. My apology for the excessive delay in replying to my query in post #538 on 22 December 2018 - 11:52 AM. I seem to have stepped on the medical equivalent of a landmine and been prioritizing treatment and/or repair. These wings were part of a JPAC operation. JPAC is a thoroughly discredited organization which was disbanded in January 2015 following a string of questionable activities including falsifying evidence and corruption. A quick search of US press websites and the Stars and Stripes website will provide you ample evidence on this matter. Before reading my attached reply I would suggest you start with http://www.stripes.com/jpac-admits-to-phony-ceremonies-honoring-returning-remains-1.246322#.WMOd8fJgGUk . In order to simplify the reply, and ensure all pictures are in the correct location, without taking the many hours it would take me at present to try and correctly compose this reply on line, I have created the PDF which is attached as several pages because I cannot get the pdf down to under 251K. 21. Thank you to anyone who responded to my query about Tom Lane and his collection of my maternal grandfather, Waman S. Hassett's medals of service. Our family would be very interested in buying back these family heirlooms. Hopefully, the person who now owns them will see this post. kcj
  22. . From the ' shoebox ' . . . . . . . . . it's been a while since I posted from the shoebox, and this is nothing truly astounding but it does leave me with a query, two cartons of the same manufacture ' Independence Safety Matches, one containing ten boxes and one containing twelve boxes, otherwise totally identical. 23. I have been following the why not Tiffany Cross thread on the forum and even though this is an older thread I have a question regarding Robert G Bobby Robinsons TC. Does anyone have a current picture of it? I helped a gentleman from Belgium write a self published book on Talbot/Robinson this year and would like to upgrade the picture of the medal. I was told that it was at the USMC museum but when I had a friend from CMH query them during a visit he came up empty. Lt Robinson was a friend of my dad and I knew him while growing up. He died while I was in HS. Jon Bozich told me that the USMC immediately claimed the medal after his death. Any assistance is appreciated. Regards CC
  24. I have recently acquired an early NY CSC number 168, awarded to Corporal William A Prescott, Co B 105th Infantry. The citation I have for it is "For exceptional heroism in the evacuation of the wounded under extremely heavy enemy fire. This during the Battle of Jon de Mer ridge, October 18, 1918" I assume that as he was awarded this, he had already had a SSC. Is there any way of determining: 1. The original SSC citation wording and date? 2. The date of the award of the NY CSC? 3. If he ever claimed a SS upgrade in 1932? Would I also be correct in thinking he would have been able to wear the small silver star on his Victory medal? A tight squeeze with battle clasps! And presumably he had to claim this star and mount it on the Victory medal himself, as other earlier awardees of SSC's had to as well post 1918 (ie for Spanish war?) Any help and advice appreciated! Roy
  25. Hi guys, I have a question about the USGI waterproof storage bags manufactured for M16/AR15, the ones that come with the rubber band to seal the bag, and hopefully someone with more knowledge than I have will confirm my query. I know that they were made, but were they issued to the troops in the 1960's and 1970's (Nam era)? If the answer is yes, I can buy one or several that I've seen on Epay USA, I can then add them to my collection of weapon accessories for the M16. Many thanks in advance for any help rendered. Nick
